Book Discourse on Chuang Tzu:
Focuses On Inner Life Or Focuses On Outer Life
Excerpt from book Discourse On Chuang Tzu
Whoever focuses on his inner life, attaches no significance to recognition or fame. Whoever focuses on his outer life, attaches great import to securing advancement and gain. Whoever attaches no significance to recognition or fame, naturally and unwittingly generates brilliance around him. Whoever attaches great import to securing advancement and gain, is nothing more than a simple merchant. People see that he is merely squirming and worming his way through life, while he views himself as being robust and full of vitality. He who lives in constant compatibility with all, will find that all submit to him and are accommodated by him. He who aimlessly drifts along with all, will not find room enough for anything, not even for his body. How then will he find space for his person? He who cannot find space for his person can know nothing of intimacy. Having no intimacy, it is he who will be separated from his person.
