Is It Possible To Attain Tao And Thus Possess It?
Excerpt from book Discourse on Chuang Tzu
Shun questioned Ch’eng, asking, “Is it possible to attain Tao and thus possess it?”
“You don’t even possess your own body. So how could you possibly attain Tao and then possess it!”
“If I don’t possess my own body,” asked Shun, “who exactly does?”
“It is endowed to you by heaven and earth. You do not hold life in your possession, it is a harmony endowed upon you by heaven and earth. You do not hold your disposition and appointed destiny in your possession, they are a compliance endowed upon you by heaven and earth. You do not hold your grandsons and sons in your possession, they are castoff shells endowed upon you by heaven and earth. Therefore, walking without thought for where you are going, having your home without thought about how to administer it, eating without thought for flavour or taste, all of this is endowed by the prevailing, vital breath of heaven and earth. How, then, could there be any possibility for a person to grasp it or take it into his possession?”
